Enterprise software is broken
IT systems are becoming more and more complex. The amounts of data to take into consideration are growing exponentially. Large traditional software companies and consulting firms are not able to cope with these developments. They lack a high concentration of world-class talent, and they are stuck in the business models of yesteryear.
Artilect provides an alternative. We offer our customers a comprehensive technical platform for all aspects of large-scale information management. From collection, refinement and storage to analysis, visualization and distribution. By providing seamless integration of these technologies, we are able to outperform traditional suppliers and build sustainable long-term solutions.
Middle-sized organisations often have large and complex data sets, but not enough resources to create and maintain strong technical teams. Our mission is to provide these organizations with the technological opportunities normally only available to highly specialized software companies. At Artilect we live and breathe databases, collection techniques, data mining, search engines and API:s. We aim to make these technologies available to any organization, regardless of their in-house technical resources.
At the core Artilect is a research company, and all our customers benefit from our long-term focus. Instead of initiating new multi-year development projects to keep up with the progress of technology, customers continually get access to improvents of the platform, always keeping solutions up-to-date with the kind of state-of-the-art craftsmanship that is our core value.

The fine art of collecting
One of the specialties of Artilect is gathering data, for monitoring the world around you as well as for managing internal workflows.
The amount of useful information available is growing rapidly, but distributed over many sources. The task of collecting and consolidating is accordingly becoming more and more complex. Many organisations fail to achieve the potential leverage of big data analysis. We are dedicated to alleviating this problem.
As an example, our state-of-the-art web crawling infrastructure is built with Erlang, the industrial strength platform developed by Ericsson for large and highly mission critical telecom systems. This enables us monitor millions of web sites and do large-scale analysis of events and trends.
In addition, to accomodate customer data, we have systems for connecting to many kinds of existing databases, import Excel-files and Word-documents, OCR scanned material, interface with API:s and more. Our goal is to make all the information you need effortlessly available.
We have a number of ready-made parsers and ontologies for finding various kinds of data - news articles, people, organizations, products and much more. We are also eager to create new ways of extracting data for customers with special requirements, so if we do not have a module for finding the information you need, we will build it and make it part of the platform.

Know thy data, know thyself
When working with multiple sources of information, it is crucial to acheive a unified, coherent data model. You need to know what data is there, and how the various sets of data are interrelated. Many organizations have solid information resources, but no practical way of combining, aggregating and cross-fertilizing them.
The Artilect platform provides a number of methods of structuring semi-structured information. We are passionate about cleaning up and normalizing complex legacy data and we are constantly creating new tools for this purpose. A large part of our work is to consolidate the understanding of the information flows underlying a business.
Among other things, we have developed our own algorithms for analyzing various kinds of documents, like complex PDF files and scanned documents. We can do many things automatically that other companies still have to do with large amounts of manual labour.
For complex solutions, our in-house experts on data modelling are available to analyze and formalize any domain or workflow. We are passionate about understanding what our customers are doing, what their core challenges are and how advanced technology can solve their problems. We do thorough research and often help customers understand their own workflows better.

The data warehouse of the future
Artilect provides several distributed database systems for secure and high-performing cloud storage, integrated seamlessly with every aspect of the platform. Instead of managing servers of your own and struggling with scaling databases - outsource this crucial step to us, who are passionate about and extremely dedicated to managing data.
Once your information is in the Artilect platform, you can effortlessly connect it to a large number of services, including data mining algorithms, search engines, drill-downs, visualizations and API:s for integration in other systems.
By leveraging best-in-breed technologies and a number of our own tools, we store your data in a way that maximizes accessability and usefulness. In the mean time, you can focus on building your business, making full use of your information resources.

Your data at its most beautiful
Delve into your data, drill-down and filter to get at the most useful and appealing perspectives. Combine and compare multiple data sets and choose between a number of ways of presenting it.
With the Artilect platform you have a complete laboratory to explore and present your information. Save the most interesting views and use them for reports and as web based widgets.
Several systems for visualization and presentation are built in, both open source and proprietary. In addition to several libraries for drawing beautiful charts, we have a map system based on OpenStreetMap, allowing us to display data geographically in a very flexible way.
Every type of presentation is available as a self-contained widget, ready for quick and seamless integration into any web site.

Be part of the ecosystem
It is often the case that an organization has relatively well-structured data, but in a form which is not readily accessible to the potential users. A typical example is a government agency tasked with opening up information to the public and third-party developers. What is needed is an API which enables other systems to access data over the net in a systematic and unified way.
Information managed with the Artilect platform is automatically opened up into powerful API:s - for internal use or public access, or both. An API is often an excellent way of leveraging existing information resources, not least by allowing external participants to contribute. With an open API, third parties can provide apps, mashups and further analysis based on your data, thus doing much valuable work for you and providing great PR.
We help organization structure information in a way that is suitable for an API, by creating a unified data model which connects various kinds of information. We develop all our API:s according to best practices, such as REST, and provide the necessary server power and maintenance. We analyze API usage to summarize who uses it, what data are used most and how it is accessed.
With an API open to the public, it is especially important to achieve high performance and scalable solutions, since there is no telling who will eventually use the system. For a closed API, intended for use internally or for trusted partners, security is paramount. Protecting sensitive data is part of the core Artilect mission.

Our track record
From 2008 onwards, Artilect was concerned purely with research and we gradually started to develop the comprehensive platform envisioned when the company was founded.
Openaid.se
In 2010, we started taking our services to the market, and the Swedish Foreign Ministry (Utrikesdepartementet) contracted us to organize data about Swedish foreign aid activities. After doing data inventory, defining a comprehensive domain model and collecting information from a multitude of sources, we created the first unified database Swedish of aid data, spanning all Swedish foreign aid from the sixties onward.
The end result was a comprehensive API which is now open for the public, including aid organizations, journalists and researchers. Also, a website was created where the public can browse and interact with the data: openaid.se
Företagsklimatet.se
Recently, Artilect has helped the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise (Svenskt Näringsliv) to survey the local business climate in the municipalities. We collected and consolidated data from a variety of sources, and both an open API and a comprehensive website will be launched in late 2011. Get a sneak peak: fklimat.se
